Senior School Scholarships

Dating back to 1541 there have been King’s Scholars at the School.  Academic Scholars who are awarded Major King’s Scholarships are enrolled as members of Rochester Cathedral Foundation for perpetuity and they attend King’s Sunday Eucharist, usually held on the first and last Sundays of each term.

Senior School Academic Scholarships are awarded to academically-gifted pupils from the start of Remove (Year 9) or Lower Sixth (Year 12). These may be Major King’s Scholars or Minor King’s Scholars.

These scholarships are available for all pupils entering the Senior School on the basis of outstanding academic performance.

Major and Minor Academic Scholarships

• Major King’s Scholarships offering a 30% reduction in fees.

• Minor King’s Scholarships offering a 15% reduction in fees.

Both Major and Minor Academic Scholars are high-achievers in class and lead the way in their year group in terms of their intellectual engagement.

They are expected to attend weekly after school meetings of the Zetountes Society. These sessions involve a range of learning activities and a variety of texts and podcasts to extend thinking and provoke debate. These are supplemented by guest presentations from both staff and external speakers, and occasional visits. Older pupils are encouraged and supported to engage with national academic competitions.

The aim of the programme is to encourage pupils to question and reflect, broadening their academic horizons in order to establish links across subjects, space and time. The programme has not been designed to replace our curriculum, which is firmly rooted in “stretch and challenge” and differentiation for all abilities, but rather it looks to further enrichment through opportunities that will be provided outside of the classroom. It will foster crucial skills, for those aspiring to the most competitive universities, including Oxbridge and Russell Group, while equipping pupils to be leaders and innovators in tomorrow’s society.

Remove (Year 9) Entry

External candidates may sit the Common Entrance scholarship examination. However, if a pupil has not been prepared for the Common Entrance, they may take King’s own 13+ Senior School entrance examination on a mutually convenient date.

Internal candidates from King’s Preparatory School are awarded scholarships on the basis of results in the Senior School entrance examinations (sat in June of Year 8).

Major King’s Scholars are expected to attain all A grades with no more than one B grade.

Minor King’s Scholars are expected to attain all A grades with no more than three B grades.

Sixth Form (Year 12) Entry

Major King’s Scholars are expected to achieve Grades 8 and 9 in all GCSE results.

Minor King’s Scholars are expected to achieve a minimum of all Grade 7s at GCSE.

• All scholarships are retained for the duration of a pupil’s career at the School, subject to conduct and progress being maintained and an annual review.

• Awards to current pupils at King’s (i.e. end of Remove, Lower Fifth, Lower Sixth) of either major or minor scholarships are made on the basis of end of year examinations using the same criteria as for Sixth Form entry. These will rank equally with external scholarships but may have no financial value.

Applications

All interested applicants are encouraged to discuss their eligibility with the Principal prior to their application. Please contact the Head of Admissions for an Academic Scholarship application form on 01634 888590 or email admissions@kings-rochester.co.uk

Cathedral Choristerships are awarded to boys and girls for entry into Year 4 after voice trials with the Cathedral Director of Music, academic assessment and interview.

A voice trial involves ear tests and the singing of a previously prepared song or hymn. The Cathedral’s Director of Music is looking for a candidate’s potential, rather than their present achievement and the Director is always happy to have an informal discussion with any parents and candidates before the actual voice trial.  If a candidate currently plays an instrument, it would be advantageous to hear it played during the voice trial.

Cathedral Choristers may be eligible for a Music Scholarship in King’s Senior School following their Chorister career provided that they have satisfied the requirements for this award.

Cathedral Choristerships are awarded to boys and girls with a remission of 30% on fees, to pupils who will be eight years old by the September they enter Year 4. Choristers also receive full remission on the tuition fees of one orchestral instrument and an additional third remission on a further instrument; these lessons should be taken in school. Choristers also receive free Theory of Music coaching and vocal lessons.

Cathedral Choristerships will terminate, under normal circumstances, either when a Chorister leaves the Choir or on their transfer to the Senior School at age 13.

Potential Choristers should not be entered for a Choristership if it is their intention that they will leave King’s at the end of Year 6.

Applications

All interested applicants are encouraged to discuss their eligibility with the Director of Music or Headmaster of the Preparatory School prior to their application.

Bursaries

Bursaries offer means-tested financial support to pupils who otherwise would be unable to attend King’s School Rochester. They may be offered in addition to the award of a scholarship to increase the value of the award.

Assistance with Fees for New Pupils at the School

All candidates being offered a Scholarship Award are eligible for an additional means-tested bursary. In exceptional circumstances, the School may consider means-tested bursarial support for new pupils who do not fit the scholarship criteria.

The School has charitable status and the Governors wish to ensure the limited available funds are used to support parents who otherwise would not be able to send their child to King’s School Rochester. Therefore, any such award is based not only on the candidate’s performance in the entrance assessment but also on an annual declaration of income and assets, consideration of the benefit to the child of an education at King’s and also the likely positive contribution to School life that the child will make during their time here.

Assistance with Fees for Current Parents

Financial assistance may be awarded to existing pupils where a change in parents’/guardians’ circumstances results in difficulty in meeting tuition fees. The financial assistance is subject to careful consideration and assessment and, once granted, is means-tested annually.

Clergy Remission

Children of Church of England Ministers, and priests of a church in communion with the Church of England, are given a means-tested reduction in fees.

Service Personnel Remission

King’s School Rochester operates within the MoD Scheme for Continuity of Education Allowance for boarding school pupils. Day places are also eligible for a Service remission which is calculated by means-testing.

Sibling Remission

Where parents have three or more children at the School, a reduction for each after the second child is given, amounting to 10% of the third child’s fees, 20% for the fourth child and 40% for the fifth and subsequent children.

Conditions Of Scholarships & Bursaries

Parents will be required to repay all or part of the benefits they have received under the awards explained in the above information in any of the following circumstances:

• Up to three terms benefits (if received) if the pupil has engaged in serious misconduct or has been expelled or removed for reasons of misconduct by requirement of the Principal acting in good faith

• Up to three terms benefits (if received) where the pupil has been withdrawn for any reason

For more information, please contact the Bursar on 01634 888608 or email bursary@kings-rochester.co.uk
